Mrs. Ocker teamed up with 4th-grade teachers Ms. Lind and Ms. Schmalfeldt to co-teach a creative and engaging lesson on careers and persuasive writing. The lesson began with the story How Santa Got His Job by Stephen Krensky, which students enjoyed through a read-aloud. The humorous and inspiring story follows Santa as he tries various jobs—postal worker, zookeeper, circus performer, and chimney sweep—learning new skills and facing challenges along the way. With the help of friendly elves, Santa ultimately finds his perfect fit. This story encouraged students to reflect on their own skills and the importance of perseverance in finding the right career.
Inspired by the book, students learned that Santa was hiring new helpers at the North Pole for roles such as:
Baker Elf
Caretaker Elf
Decorator Elf
Delivery Elf
Designer Elf
Gift Wrapping Elf
Head Elf
Scout Elf
Security Elf
Toy Tester Elf
Each job had its own description and required skills. For example, the Caretaker Elf looks after the reindeer, taking care of their feeding, grooming, and exercise. This role requires a love of animals, comfort with barn smells, and a willingness to run and brush the reindeer.
After reading the job descriptions, students chose a job that matched their skills and interests. They then wrote persuasive letters to Santa, explaining why they were the perfect fit for the job. Students used descriptive language to highlight their talents and organized their ideas with transition words, creating compelling and well-structured letters.
To complete the activity, Mrs. Ocker helped the students “elf themselves” by creating life-sized elf cutouts featuring their faces. This fun and festive project blended career exploration, literacy, creativity, and holiday spirit, leaving students with a memorable and joyful experience.
Join us on January 10th at Brookwood Middle School for a fun, free family event from 5pm-7pm! Lace up your roller skates and enjoy quality family time together. Please note, this is not a drop-off event—parents and guardians are encouraged to stay and create lasting memories with their kids. Limited supply of adult sized skates: 1-12. We can't wait to see you there!
